Giselle Beiguelman 2

More research on Beiguelman, led to visual poetry. A kind of moving text using Flash to combine text, sound, codes and language. He is obviously a Semiotics fan! For more info:

Giselle Beiguelman

The URL below is about an artist Giselle Beiguelman who uses electronic billboards as form of art, poetry and mass communication. He really combines many media in a fresh way …to create new meaning? A form of electronic collage for the 21st century…out on the streets rather than in the galleries?

Jenny Holzer

Thanks to Agot, I came across Jenny Holzer's work. An interaction of poetry, light and large building. One of the pics on the left is of a New York library which I recently visited. Holzer has used the large buildings like a book/canvase with thoughfully challeging poetry! Sunil

New York Billboards

A subsequent video posting…this time it goes around a corner!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EOoBo5obec

Pluses
>The technology seems to offer new ways of manipulating movement, intensity of colour or moving images over time (video)
> Changes the whole environment as the video clip shows

Minuses
 lack of time for contemplation
 sophistication of tones, colours, lines…etc

Bill Viola is an artist who has used video on large scale but in gallery environment. He has unusually gone for very subtle effects such as slow motion shoots say of a man under water (Tate Modern). He is someone who has used the digital media in very simple yet very imaginative way.

Questions
1 – Are there any other fine-art based artist using this media?
2 – What are their intentions?
3 – What are the media’s strengths and weaknesses?

I wonder if the skyscrapers of New York could be considered new canvases of the 21st Century.
