Billboards of New York (Times Square)
I've uploaded a video clip of the electronic billboards of New York (Times Square).
This can be found at the following URL:

Are they more representative of the times we live in than the art galleries and museums?
Any comments?
Sunil

New York was a bit of an overload for me. Maybe getting old! However, a younger fellow studnet was also "blown away" by the Billboards. Colour, movement, light, noise...all to a high intensity, like a rock concert. Imapct - certainly. Long term value to me, after some time for quite reflection...well I'm going to sleep on it for a while and let the unconscious do the thinking. Hopefully some questions will emerge by next week! Sunil
Interesting that some of the billboards are totally familiar (Virgin), some are somewhat familiar (Footlocker?) and some completely strange.
It speaks of the global society I suppose.
The other thing that struck me was the steam coming out from the 'sidewalk' or I presume from there because the floor was not shown - this is one thing that always says New York to me - I can't think of anywhere else I've seen it - certainly not London! It seems that New York is building up a head of steam and is about to explode!
Hi Sunil,
Thinking about NY billboards brought to mind the billboard and poster artworks by The Guerilla Girls and Barbara Kruger. Also Jenny Holzer who combined moving digital text and the billboard format in her work. I think Susan Hiller has made work along these lines too.
Maria.
Lynda,
The steam was memorable...comes from the subways - which are only a few meters below ground level. I took pics of a consruction site near some skyscrapers...there is an amazing network of tubes, wires, pipes...etc like the roots of a tree, all invisible to the eye (untill you excavate). Sunil
Maria,
The Guerilla Girls I believe started in NY (how appropriate). For a message/work with strong colour or movement, billboards seem appropriate. Subtle moods, tones, messages...maybe/maybe not. For impact they are difficult to avoid! Sunil
